Cops search for Naxalites in Yercaud
SALEM: A special task force (STF) team headed by inspector K Sasikumar from Mettur camp conducted a search in Shervaroy hills in Yercaud on Monday. The combing operation was conducted reportedly to check naxalite movements in the hill station.
The team searched three villages in Yercaud – Kondayanur, Panrikadu and Pattipadi – but did not find anything suspicious. The villagers have been told to inform authorities if they find strangers moving suspiciously in the forest.
“Search was not based on any tip off about naxal movement. It was just a routine check,” said STF inspector Sasikumar.
The operation was conducted without giving any notice to the forest department, said Salem district forest officer B Sugirtharaj Koilpillai.
On September 22, 2011, a massive combing operation was conducted by the police and forest department in Yercaud, after receiving a tip-off about an armed group intrusion in the hills.
