Dimoriamo nelle prigioni dentro speciali gabbiette,
Perché come all’esterno, un conflitto costante
prigionia:
individuale o in relazione agli altri prigionieri (anarchici o no).
Procedura
prigionieri anarchici negli ultimi 3 anni.
Cosi, vengono
qualunque altro caso simile.
lotta creando immagini e riproducendo spettacoli, guardiamo avanti e
50 giorni in isolamento.

Divisi in diversi gruppi, ci siamo mossi
metropolitane stanno lavorando senza sosta. Abbiamo reso inutilizzabili 3

Greece -SOLIDARITY TO THE ANARCHIST COMRADE RAMI SYRIANO FROM The anarchist prisoners of war Skouloudis G. Tzifkas S. Dimtsiadis D. Tsilianidis M.
Act for freedom now! receives and transmits:
Τhe essence and the power of one -and only one-
denial in a world foul of conventions.
The last few
years dozens are the fighters of the anarchist/revolutionary community that
have been incarcerated in the prisons of greek democracy.
Captives of
the state for attempting to intensify the social civil war (that each one of us
with his own way and speech has dared to attempt), we confront the condition of
confinement and the conventions this condition produces.
We wander
the prisons inside the special small-cages, where we are not put standing , we
live in a minimal vital space that is given to us, we respond as all the
prisoners to the commands of a loudspeaker (one for visiting, for the grocer, for
the lawyer etc.), we hear the bell and we enter
our cells for counting, we are let out to the yard the hours that we are
allowed to etc.
In short, the
conventions that we make in prison are many, suffocating and have become piece
of a circular repeated and controlled
everyday life in which we have conformed in order to survive, to collect forces
for the (usually) surgically considered
refusals and moments of struggle that we trigger. Because like in the outside, a
constant conflict within a completely alien, if not enemy, environment is not
possible, since it ends up being not only stalemate but also
self-destructive.
But against
an energetic or passive defeatism that wants things stable and especially,
stable and enslaved, we discover and we try to spread out that there is a small
difference -with sharp qualitative contrasts- between a condition of slavery
and a condition of imprisonement:
a) to recognize the temporariness of
our residence in prison and at the same time to not accept it as something that
we have to go through with our heads down waiting for the moment of our
release.
b) to feel the urgent need (based on a
simultaneous expression of consciousness and instinct) to fight and liberate
ourselves- even for a moment, in every possible way-.
c) to experiment with the possibilities
and to feel the potential for the construction even of minorities communities
of self-education/ conversation/struggle
against the tactics of ”divide and rule” that is promoted by (both) the
”correctional service” aiming at the religious, racial, and financial divisions
between inmates.
d) to develop a perception that seeks
and causes rifts within the confined space and condensed time where we survive.
It makes us endure, keeping first of all
ourselves alive, and strong in constant readiness and further on keeping alive
the bet of our struggle in these dumps.
This way, every individual (or group),
according of course to his theoretical base and values, but even through the
material perspective he gives to the struggle itself even in the spaces of his
”punishment” and ”isolation”, continues to defend his existence, to defend
his struggle- out of the walls-, and to often express it, adapted to the conditions
”here”, individually or in relation to other prisoners (anarchists or not).
Because besides the ”musts” that party define
our existence in prison, someone can trace moments of individual or collective
denials and actions, inside the enemy ground but also a daily, invisible, small
or large preparation of those actions as well as of the relations that can be
born.
Relations between the prisoners of war, but
also relations between the prisoners of war with this part of the rest of the
prisoners that refuse to be sold out to the correctional service, who refuse
the nightmare of drugs and psychotropics, who refuse to become snitches, who are
not willing to be part of the
hierarchy of the prison (whether as leaders or as followers), who are willing
to detach themselves from individualism and the cannibal criminality (that is
directed towards anyone) that has led them to prison, who are willing to not
complete their sentence with their heads down, and through the condition itself
that they experience (imprisonement and division) to construct a new identity
based on solidarity and the thirst for freedom.
So, one of the choices we make in prison on a
personal level, is the choice of refusing to take off our underwear during the
body search that the new comers have to
face. A process during which apart from the stripping, according to the
correctional facility as they like to call it, the prisoner might be asked to
make ”deep sit downs”, to bend over in front of the guard coughing, to give
urine sample.
Maybe this phenomenon of this denial in the
greek prisons comes from people who are anarchists or not, whom we haven’t had
the honor to meet, but we heard about this stance from a comrade who started to
practice it when he went to prison in 2009.
In rapid speed, which came from our inclination
to continue the struggle under the new conditions that we found ourselves in,
we decided to familiarize with this practice, as well as several other
anarchist prisoners the last 3 years.
The reaction of the ”correctional service”,
apart from the surprise that is the initial reaction of most of the guards (who
are unfortunately used to doing whatever they want), is different from prison
to prison and the moment it is expressed. It varies from the use of moderate
means (metal detectors because obviously they are not searching for drugs) up
to the isolation and disciplinaries penalties or transfers, to the violent
stripping by the guards.
The process of correction functions as a
mechanism that wants to break the outlaw and the undisciplined prisoner and
aims to guide him to his taming through the way of individual solutions and
subservient behaviors that will offer him a lighter treatment in his daily life
in prison or in court. In this way, the normality of the prison is ensured,
with drugs and psychotropics that are
openly distributed confirming this condition.
The body search is a basic element of this
process. During this search, the prisoner comes in contact for the first time
with the guards and accept his first commands.
It is that moment in time when the prisoner as
well as the guard will define and trace each other and will establish to a
large extent the mutual treatment for the time they will find each other on
both sides of the bars of the ward.
So, as a result of our desire, to not dive in
quittance we believe that the denial to the putting off our underwear on our
behalf can be a small denial among dozens of daily conventions with the world
of the prison, but at least it puts an embankment to the invasion that is
attempted by the guards on our lives and bodies.
Because in this way, despite the consequences
we may face, we put a line against the ”correctional service” reminding them
how fragile and temporary is their attempt to control our moves, while at the
same time we take back- even for a while, even partially- the control of our
bodies by not allowing it to become a sight for control by any sadist or
pervert.
So, by denying to go through the most
humiliating moments of control, we make them understand that we will not be
subservient on a permanent base to the orders they give to us, by executing
them. This way, the first limits are set, the first balances in an -either way-
authoritative relation between the guard and the prisoner.
If a prisoner has something to gain (even) in
this way, is that he is not later treated in an offensive manner, to not have
his demands ignored, to not have to face the attempt to be asked for any favor
giving him something in return, things that not rarely happen.
So , this denial is
for us of major importance and its essence lies in its expression itself in the
specific space and time.
Of course everyone defines the priorities of
denials and moments of struggle (at least if there is such an inclination) he
or she sets, so under no condition do we think that all prisoners or even
anarchist prisoners that don’t react to this measure have something less -
whatever this something may be- than others who react. For someone it might be
more important to stand up and prepare a denial, where and when someone else
signs a convention or vice versa. In here, either way, no one is 100 percent
”clean”, even though we all probably see the conventions of the other as a
counterweight to how our own conventions make us feel.
Either way, there is the need for the modulation
of the denials and the isolated- decentered actions from individual to
individual and from prison to prison, there is the need for UNITY and the
CONVERGENCE OF STRUGGLES AND PERCEPTIONS between the prisoners of war and to
this direction we all have to move from the moment we set as our priority an
ANARCHIST REVOLUTION, of the projectualities of SOLIDARITY, of ANTIHIERARCHAL
ORGANIZATION, of the DESTRUCTION OF THE AUTHORITATIVE AND CAPITALIST SOCIETY
and its PRISONS.
Finishing..
From the moment that even blurry we recognise
the existence of a community of struggle, from the moment that we hurt when our
comrades outside of the walls receive a blow, from the moment that we have
recognised that the solidarity to the faces of the anarchist prisoners that
select the denial of stripping, is certain and substantial (taking away though
primary powers in a period when the dispute saunters among our circles and
slows down our raid to the sky), we felt that we own an honest and obviously
subjective placement on the specific subject in order to communicate its
importance to any people, show or not their interest for the case of Rami today
or for any similar case.
Getting away from a simple and unequivocal
reference to any dignity (in one or another way an ambiguous term) denying to
turn to memorials moments and choices of struggles or fighters creating images
and reproducing spectacles, we look forward to offering fuel sources to the
motivation of the outside of the walls comrades whoa according to our modest
view is necessary to set as priority and to highlight with any possible way
that an anarchist prisoner has been for 50 days in isolation.
Still looking for ways to find more dynamic channels of action that
ultimately imply to the relations and the preparation that we mentioned in our
text, we start trolley-food denial by 16/5, as an indication of solidarity to
the anarchist comrade Rami Syriano who claims for his immediate transfer to
another prison and ward, conducting hunger strike since 15/5.

the honor to meet, but we heard about this stance from a comrade who started to
practice it when he went to prison in 2009.

Thessaloniki: Responsibility claim for sabotage on ATMs in solidarity with imprisoned anarchist Rami Syrianos, who is on hunger strike since May 15th
Downtown Thessaloniki
Friday, 13.15pm Divided into different groups of comrades, we moved synchronously in order to disrupt, even in a symbolic way, the city’s normality during rush hour, when the metropolitan factory’s machines are working nonstop. We smashed and took 3 ATMs out of service, thus sabotaging the Capital’s smooth flow.
With this action we stand on the side of anarchist Rami Syrianos, who is facing trial on Monday, May 21st, for the expropriation of ODDY’s auction and today (18/5) he is on his 4th day of hunger strike, demanding his exit from the solitary confinement and his transfer from Nigrita–Serres prisons.
The comrade has been in solitary confinement inside Nigrita prisons for almost two months, paying the price of dignity and combative stance, the highest of offenses for the correctional system.
Of course, we neither forget comrade Olga Ekonomidou, member of Conspiracy of Cells of Fire, who is also being held in solitary confinement in Diavata women’s prisons for almost two weeks now, due to her dignified stance inside the prison society.

Thessaloniki: Supermarket expropriation as a token of solidarity with imprisoned anarchist Rami Syrianos, who is on hunger strike since May 15th
Text that was shared out during the supermarket expropriation:
We won’t beg for a pittance from no boss. We live in a reality full of inequalities. Others wonder what to throw out from their filled fridge, and others look for food in the garbage bins. Others are looking after a career with high salaries, and others chase after a day wage to survive. Others wonder about the ways of exercising their civil rights while others have absolutely no legal right. The balances developed for the preservation of this reality, as it is, are vulnerable; we will be striking right there.
Expropriated products from the supermarket will not be missed as staple goods by anybody; they will only be missed by the store’s boss as profits. Rather than begging a boss for mercy or for a few poorly paid working hours at his/her service, we prefer to take goods without paying when, otherwise, we cannot obtain basic necessities. Thus, we see that for a while we break this cycle of slavery, claiming a few hours of our day for doing something more constructive.
The war rages on. No need for us to declare one. There’s need for us to organize, to defend ourselves against the bosses’ onslaught by finding ways to deal blows to them. Far from the cliché that portrays us as modern-day Robin Hoods, and without claiming any avant-garde position, we want to share motives and incentives. Moves like this one are a way but not an end in itself. We’re not content to simply have bosses around to steal or beg from, or to live from their garbage. We wish to be responsible for ourselves and our relationships, and we don’t want anybody over our heads to arrange things for us.
An open wager that may come at a price…
As we choose to move in this way, we don’t forget the comrades from Larissa who are still prosecuted and awaiting trial on charges of abetting predatory theft, punishable with imprisonment between 5 and 20 years, for an action in February 2009, just like ours today (18/5).
We neither forget comrade Rami Syrianos, who has been imprisoned because he expropriated money from the dealer of stolen property ODDY, an organization that plays the role of the State’s fence by selling cars confiscated from people because of debts at auctions. His trial is rescheduled for May 21st. In Nigrita prisons, where he is now being held, Rami has been targeted by the prison service because of his participation in the inmates’ struggles and his resistance against the humiliation of strip search. A special regime of isolation has been imposed on him, as he has spent the longests time in solitary confinement in this prison, alone in the newcomers’ cells. From May 15th he went on hunger strike demanding an end to this regime as well as his transfer to another prison. We are by his side.
… Yet a wager that’s worth winning.

Until the destruction of the last prison SOLIDARITY IS OUR WEAPON
Since Tuesday, May 15th, anarchist comrade
Rami Syrianos start a hunger strike in Nigrita prisons (near Serres,
northern Greece), demanding his exit from the solitary confinement cell,
where he was placed one month and a half ago, awaiting the
implementation of a disciplinary prison transfer that has been imposed
on him since March 28th.
en it - Text from anarchist Rami Syrianos announcing the start of his hunger strike (Greece)
325 receives and transmits:
-On 26 of March I’m transferred from Nigrita’s prison to the courts of Thessaloniki, due to the trial against me for the expropriation of ODDY’s* auction.
After the trial being postponed once again, i am transferred back to Nigrita’s prison the same day. There i am subjected into search investigation during which I deny, once again, to consent in putting off my underwear (a procedure well-known to the prisons as “bend & cough”). They transfer me into the “newcomers’ cells” and present me subsequently before the prosecutor, who officially imposes me the penalty of disciplinary jail transfer, accusing me for ‘disobedience’ as well as the indefinite isolation in this particular cell, unofficially, until I consent in the realization of this particular search investigation or (until) the disciplinary transfer is made.
-I remain, ever since, under this special detention regime, awaiting my jail transfer.
-It’s clear, judging by the analogy itself between the initial denial and the subsequent penalty, that the whole issue has a minimum relation with the specific investigation and the possible consequences that it’s denial can have in the jail’s function. The declarations from the prison’s administration side, speaking about their fear that this particular practice could become a common one, as well as the threats -during the prisoners’ mobilizations 4 months ago- which were actually pre-announcing the imposition of a disciplinary jail transfer against me, on the 26th of March, have much more to say about the essence of this two-months isolation, than all the rhetorics upon prison security measures, spoken on behalf of the prison’s directors.
-The prison’s environment consists primarily a totalitarian mechanism of authoritarian reproduction. Being the hardened reflection of the wider social situation, jail holds the role of a laboratory, where the procedure of the individual’s obedience towards the authority, happens in the most absolute way.
Within the prison’s environment, nothing occurs by chance.
From the spatial planning to the procedures of the ‘benefits’ and the disciplinary penalties, every aspect of the correctional system’s function is built in a way that the prisoners should internalize the ideas of permanent surveillance, slavishness, snitching and no-term obedience to the orders.
Within this condition, where they try to take every part of your existence away from your control, that the bars intend to find their way inside you until your dreams to stay imprisoned behind them, what inviolably remains under your control, is the choice of negation. Negations that stay always partial, ‘few’, among the countless contracts you make daily. It would be hard for anyone to claim that he remained totally disobedient inside the walls.
-Speaking particularly upon the search investigation procedure, there would certainly be lots to write. Through stripping, bending and coughing, the prisoner’s position within the prison’s hierarchy is tried to be made clear under the most evident way, while at the same time this procedure is marked as a central and crucial act of his transformation, from a dignified person into a manipulated object.
-The actual denial of this procedure is a minimum denial of this particular imposed position. This denial, however, unquestionably does not consist the epitome of all negations. Neither some thin line separating dignity from non-dignity. But what it does consist, is the drawing of a border, which stands as a reminder to myself as well as to every uniformed person, that I am still alive, that I do not obey, that the prison has not entered inside me.
-These two months of isolation, are the cost of this very disobedience. Having -since the beginning- rejected the possibility to succumb to the blackmail of agreeing for the investigation in order for this situation to finish, I decided to demand its end in a dynamic way, using the only means available. Therefore, I started a trolley-food denial on the 5th of May, demanding the immediate end of this condition and an immediate jail transfer. One week later, realizing that this symbolic move was inefficient, i decided to use the ultimate means that someone has under this circumstances and start a hunger strike on May’s 15th, demanding the satisfaction of the above.
I would like to send my warm comrade greetings to all those that broke the walls of isolation through their words and actions, both inside and outside the prisons…

l’esproprio all’asta di ODDY*.
mutande (rinomata procedura chiamata “chinati e tossisci”).
In prigione nulla accade
l’obbedienza senza termini agli ordini.
modo dinamico, usando i soli mezzi disponibili.
Rami Syrianos

One week later, realizing that this symbolic move was inefficient, i decided to use the ultimate means that someone has under this circumstances and start a hunger strike on May’s 15th, demanding the satisfaction of the above.
I would like to send my warm comrade greetings to all those that broke the walls of isolation through their words and actions, both inside and outside the prisons…

Therefore, I started a trolley-food denial on the 5th of May, demanding the immediate end of this condition and an immediate jail transfer. en it - About anarchist comrade Rami Syrianos being in solitary confinement – Greece
by *s*Sunday May 6 2012
Comrade Rami Syrianos is being held for over a month (since 26th of March) in solitary confinement of Serres’ Nigrita Prison, in the ‘cells for the newcomers’.After the latest postponement of his court -for which he was moved the same morning to the courts of Thessaloniki and was turned back the same day to Nigrita Prison- he denied once again the humiliating process of body search [the prisoner is supposed to take off his underwear and cough while bending] and was taken subsequently to the prosecutor the next day, which imposed him the penalty of ‘disciplinary jail transfer’.
Our comrade is being isolated from the prison’s wings ever-since, in one of the “newcomers’ cells”. These particular spaces, apart of the name, are not at all different than the typical solitary confinement cells. Spaces made for the ones that arrive to any jail for a first time as well as for those coming back from an ‘exit permission’. Isolated from all the common-used spaces, without any yarding (in our comrade’s case, he ‘s permitted to have a walk of half an hour in a corridor in order to make one-two phonecalls per day…)
We should note, speaking in their own terms, that the maximum disciplinary isolation penalty that someone could get cannot overpass 10 days…We note this not to denounce just another ‘irregularity’ of the prison system, which on its own basis consists anyway probably the worst irrationalism of the human existence, but to let one of its largest aspects be shown.
Apart of depriving “freedom”, the physical restriction, the control and supervision, it ‘s more about flattening the prisoner’s dignity. When all the previous are not enough to achieve this, the system needs to invent other ways…
And while Rami Syrianos remains isolated for over a month, waiting for the prison transfer that is imposed to him, his lawyer was informed today [27/4] through the ministry of justice that the disciplinary decision has not been yet sent to the ministry, obviously not by any mistake, meaning that his ‘accommodation’ in Nigrita Prison under solitary confinement is being extended.
We would like to remind that our comrade continues the trolley-food denial since 11/4, in solidarity with the hunger strikers of the C.C.F. members as well as with Alexandros Mitrousias, Kostas Sakkas and Giorgos Karagiannidis, as the comrades of C.C.F. keep on striking demanding the final transfer of P.Argyrou and G.Tsakalos from the Domokos’ prison.
PS: We would like to mention the fact that another prisoner, C.D., was the only one from the whole 2nd wing of the jail that started a trolley-food denial in solidarity with Rami Syrianos’ situation, a denial that started since the very first day of Rami’s penalty and that is being continued up to now.
C.D. denied to enter inside his cell on April 14th, protesting Rami’s absence from the common spaces of the prison. He was obliged to spend a night in isolation and threatened to receive a disciplinary penalty as well, a threat that was hopefully not made.

en es gr - Letter from Rami Syrianos in regards to his case - April 2011

Without a doubt, we are living through a period where the living conditions in this world are being renegotiated in their totality. Capitalism’s gleaming shop window has been shattered to reveal what lies behind: a process of putrefaction and decadence. Democratic hopes and capitalist promises are being ousted alongside the fictitious prosperity -through loans- of capitalism’s golden age experienced in previous decades; at the same time the “promised land”—complete with private swimming pool, two cars, and four televisions— is replaced by a gray desert of depression, desperation, insecurity, and fear. Domination, in a demonstration of its more then efficient flexibility, is withdrawing toward a new kind of digitally programmed totalitarianism, and is creating bulwarks by setting up new police units, biometric databases, and even newer, more elastic “antiterrorist” laws—all in an attempt to steel itself against the enemy within, which is threatening the ever-so-fragile social peace. The transparent social galley is being transformed into a maximum-security prison, as social cohesion built up over years is set in renegotiation of the rules on which it was based: access to wealth and consumption; the promises and hopes of social ascent and recognition; the role of wage-labor as a means to satisfy needs and desires and as a ticket to human self-fulfillment in a world of consumerist dreams and sensations.
Work is not simply and exclusively an economic process that commercializes human activity. Due to its totalitarian character, it imposes itself as a generalized universal condition that creates and shapes relationships and consciousness. It was through the re-signification of work as a means of attaining social ascent and of capitalist promises of participation in consumption that Power was remodeled in the minds of its subjects, was shared out and broadened, thus consolidating the dominant discourse across classes. The rhetoric of “self-made businessmen”, of achieving social recognition through bank loans, but also of self- fulfillment through consumption, found fertile ground in attentive ears for the cultivation of a cannibalistic consciousness whose supreme value was the ruthless pursuit—even over dead bodies—of prestige, power, and wealth. The old working class was transformed into petty-bourgeois/middle class proprietors who identified their own interests with those of the system, since apart from their chains (now made of plastic and in the form of loans) they also had their comforts and social status to lose. Under the terms of the generalized consensus taking shape, the traditional repressive forces “withdrew” to the rearguard (although still developing under the surface) and a campaign of enervation and individuation was launched, spearheaded by prefabricated lifestyle models, of access to centers of entertainment, of social recognition, and consumerist happiness. Social peace was guaranteed through satisfying the new collective desires of a society that, hungry to consume products and images, dedicated itself to an orgy of de-signification of its own existence. This was the era in which existential poverty deepened, individuation and concern only for one’s own skin rooted themselves into people’s consciences, and life kept on loosing more and more its meaning—caged by work hours, televised reality shows, standardized entertainment outlets, and images of fictitious happiness. However, this festival had an expiration date and now the time has come to add up the bill, which will have to be paid plus the interest rates.
The new social conditions being shaped come to make the transitional leap from the internalization of control –made possible via access to power and consumer goods- to the internalization of obedience through fear, insecurity, flexible work hours, unemployment, and images of entire areas occupied by the mercenaries of the police. Using the international financial crisis as a pretext, an attempt of unprecedented scale is being made to redistribute wealth toward the highest social strata and simultaneously restructure social relations in their entirety. The fictitious image of affluence is being forcefully unseated, together with the illusions that accompanied it, and is replaced by that of a relentless future now dawning. Fear and uncertainty are coming to replace promises as the main driving force of the social machinery and to establish themselves in the minds of the until recently happy subjects, who are now watching the disintegration of their “earthly paradise” made from loans, as they are touched by the same fate to which they themselves—untroubled by all the blood that accompanied their progress and happiness—once condemned people who live on the margins of capitalism. Wage-labor, the cornerstone of widespread social change, is being stripped of its veneer as a means of ascent and success and demystified, thus revealing its true face: a coercive process of producing inequality and exploitation. Based on this condition, where the traditional mechanisms of consensus previously in function are collapsing, and with social cohesion becoming more and more fragile, Domination is adopting a discourse of war. It is declaring a permanent state of emergency and fortifying itself behind flexible new “antiterrorist” laws, biological databases, surveillance systems, and thousands of new urban mercenaries/ police officers in preparation to face the enemy within who threatens the grand plans to impose a new totalitarianism.
The rekindling of insurrectionary practices on a global level, the reappearance of metropolitan guerrilla warfare, the confrontational demos around the world, the revolts in the Arab world, the growing distrust of the role of regime intermediary being played by the Left, and the turn towards more radical forms of struggle come to remind us that the wager for a revolutionary solution has neither been lost nor forgotten. Rather, it is entering the arena once again, more urgent and vital than ever. The prosecution, imprisonment, and murder of those who struggle are not the results of an attack launched by Domination; rather they constitute its defensive efforts undertaken to address the cracks found throughout its foundation, which are becoming more and more intensified, as faith in the image of its omnipotence is dwindling day by day.
On January 31, while I was making my getaway after carrying out a robbery at the vehicle auction organized by the Public Asset Management Agency Inc. (which conducts a wide range of different auctions and is responsible for the liquidation of cars, motorcycles, and many other assets seized by the pigs or by customs), I was surrounded and arrested by uniformed pigs from the DIAS squad. They brought me to Thessaloniki Police Headquarters, where I was stripped down to my underwear, handcuffed behind my back, and made to stand facing a wall for about seven hours while various undercovers and other pigs joined the parade to get a look at me. I continually refused to say anything other than that I am an anarchist, and I also refused to have my fingerprints and photograph taken.
They later brought me to my home, which they searched for five hours before we returned to Police Headquarters. Once back there, a dozen pigs surrounded me and their chief attempted to begin a process of interrogation and humiliation of my principles in the style of a “friendly chat,” during which I heard grotesques such as: “We’re the real revolutionaries and you’re just a selfish loser,” “We’re against the banks” (!), “While you refuse to help yourself, the other one has already squealed,” [some clichés never die] etc. The only thing I told them time and time again was that I am a revolutionary anarchist and that they are nothing more than Power’s thugs—lackey enforcers of the law without minds of their own, who humiliate, torture, and murder in exchange for a salary. When morning came, after getting in touch with my lawyer I found out that—because of a phone number written on a slip of paper I tragically forgot I had on me—they had arrested another person I knew from the antiauthoritarian milieu, and the mass media had printed photos of both of us. They then brought us to court, making a shocking spectacle out of the whole thing like always. They dressed us in white bulletproof vests, with panic-stricken pigs in balaclavas looking like something out of a scene from a cheap Hollywood action flick. The only thing I told the hearing judge was that I did what I did as an anarchist in the context of the refusal of work, and that the other person being charged had nothing to do with the case. They ruled that I was to be placed in pretrial detention, while the other comrade was released because dozens of witnesses testified that he was working at the self-managed café stand in the Polytechnic school at the exact time of the robbery.
Robbing the Public Asset Management Agency Inc. dealers of stolen goods is a partial expression of my refusal to submit to the oppressive, empty reality imposed by the fragmented space and time of work hours and predetermined paths; imposed by the coercive “you must” ordered by bosses and the alienated “I want” expressed by their subordinates; imposed by a production process that turns people into living spare parts for the machinery of consumption of images and products. Rejecting to play the role either of a victim of exploitation by small or big bosses, or of the victimizer and collaborator in exploiting others; sickened as much by the submissive work ethic of the “poor but honest” worker as by the overambitious arrogance of the “successful careerist”; perceiving the entire complex of social relations as an alienated result of capitalist production, I decided to shift into individual action, throwing myself into the polymorphic revolutionary anarchist process, part of which is the refusal of work. The refusal of work can’t be a choice divorced from a more generalized rupture with Domination, and obviously this refusal isn’t necessarily defined by the means by which it is realized (i.e. a robbery). Raids on goods or money can easily degenerate into a job, with fixed hours and all the consequences that entails: the arrogance of being rich, the participation in consumerism, the fragmentation of time according to “work hours,” and the development of a (criminal) professional identity. Robbery, kidnapping, individual or collective expropriation of goods, sabotage, attacks on economic targets, collective living experiences, and give-away bazaars are all means that can be seen within the context of the overall refusal of the world of work, of production and consumption of images and products, to the degree that they bear an awareness that places them within the wider revolutionary struggle for individual and collective liberation.
As a part of this polymorphic movement, I now find myself imprisoned in the dungeons of Ioannina, paying the price for my conscious decisions. The only thing I regret is not doing more outside these walls.
No stepping down.
—Rami Syrianos, Ioannina Penitentiary Center, April 2011
