Bologna (Italy): the NO TAV liberated space of Via Libia 67 is evicted.
Both the driver of the break-down truck and the mechanic who looked at the car declared they had never seen anything like that. The pipe, in fact, was all right except for a wide and sharp upright cut… The car had been parked for days near the occupied space of via Libia.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 18 AT 8AM COPS OF ALL SORTS TURNED UP TO EVICT THE NO TAV LIBERATED SPACE OF VIA LIBIA 67 IN A JOINT OPERATION CARRIED OUT BY MUNICIPAL POLICE, POLICE, DIGOS, FIRE BRIGADE AND ANTIRIOT SQUADS.
After taking a good half an hour to decide how to climb over the barricades at the entrance and get into the building, the cops lift some of the occupants bodily out of the place. But eight comrades managed to reach the highest part of the roof and resisted there until 12:30pm, when the DIGOS backed by the fire brigade lifted them bodily and took them to the police headquarters. There the comrades were identified through pictures. All the occupiers were charged with unlawful occupation and with refusing to give their identity details. When asked to show their identity cards the comrades said their name was NO TAV.
The eviction operation, entirely led by the DIGOS, took place a few days after the car of a NO TAV occupier was sabotaged, thus endangering his life and those of the other passengers on board. The radiator pipe exploded while the car was driving at 120km per hour on a highway fast line. According to a mechanic, the damage was caused by a sharp and upright cut to the pipe that had been made earlier. The car had been parked for a few days near the NO TAV occupation.
In the evening of 13th April we had occupied the building on via Libia 67 belonging to the public administration IN RESPONSE TO THE EXPROPRIATION LAND IN VAL SUSA, WHICH HAD BEEN MADE EFFECTIVE BY LAW ON APRIL 11 IN ORDER TO START THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TURIN-LYON HIGH SPEED RAILWAY TRACK.
The refrain ‘take the valley into the city’ has been spreading across Italy for a long time now, and it has also crossed the border. For us it means to take the determined twenty-year old struggle of the Val Susa people to the cities so that the many contradictions of the system are discovered and opposed everywhere.
We live in territories that have been raped in the name of the strategic economic and political choices of those who hold the key of power.
They speak of ‘development’ and ‘requalification’, which means turning our neighbourhoods and valleys into real building yards with the promise of creating better places, more efficient, functional, safer…. but what is left by construction lobbies is only devastation.
They are planning the future on the basis of an economic efficiency which only benefits their profits while we are being asked to endure huge sacrifices. They are confining the exploited to the suburbs of the existent because when the exploited stand up power is in serious danger. They lock up all those who oppose their mechanisms of exploitation and devastation because you ought to align yourself with this society if you want to be part of the game.
They are filling the roads with cops and soldiers so that we get accustomed to their presence and to the idea of security based on brutal but legalized violence.
The world we want is not only a world without TAV. This is what the struggle going on in Val Susa for years taught us. In Bologna we had occupied a building belonging to the public administration, which had also been the headquarters of the municipal police.
After two unsuccessful attempts at selling it the building of Via Libia had remained empty. There we had opened a space not to create a fortress (as the press said during the days of the occupation) but a place of authentic socialitywell different from that offered by shopping centres; to share each other’s knowledge and abilities; to develop relations different form those imposed by work, the speed of money and the fear of not knowing what else could be sought after.
We won’t be intimidated by their sabotages, evictions or charges.
They fear freedom because their hierarchies cannot control it, they don’t know its beauty nor will they ever know it.
NO TAV OCCUPIERS OF VIA LIBIA 67, BOLOGNA.
