A fire that apparently began inside a waste can in a boys bathroom at McDonogh 35 High School
forced school officials to evacuate the building and dismiss students
early on Friday. District officials said police are investigating the
case as arson and a student has been apprehended as a suspect.
“The evidence points to arson, so we will be aggressive in identifying and dealing with those responsible for this incident,” Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said in a statement. “It will be dealt with as a serious violation of the law.”
The district’s statement described the fire as “minor,” and Kilbert
said, “The school’s emergency systems were enacted flawlessly to ensure a
fast and safe evacuation of all students, faculty and staff.”
