Man convicted of assaulting two police officers — New York City, NY

A Staten Island man has been convicted of assaulting two police officers.

District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan Jr. said Thursday that Derrick Franks has been convicted of assault, resisting arrest and obstruction.

Franks slammed Officers Michele Mazza and Danielle Donoghue against a parked car in November 2010. He then repeatedly struck Mazza’s head against the sidewalk, resulting in a concussion.

It took at least eight officers and four firefighters to subdue the 6-foot-5, 255-pound defendant.

Donovan says Franks had a prior conviction for attempted assault on a police officer in 2006.

The prosecutor says Franks could face 5 to 7 years in prison for each of the top counts. The sentencing is Feb. 17.
