From Solitary to Guantanamo North to House Arrest
Surviving 12 years of detention without charge in Canada

Speaking event with Mohammad Mahjoub, with Adil Charkaoui reading his prison poetry.
Adil Charkaoui is a Montrealer who won his case against a security certificate in 2009.

For almost twelve long years, Mohammad Mahjoub, a torture survivor from Egypt’s Mubarak regime, has been detained without charge in Canada. All on the basis of secret information which the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has admitted was likely obtained under torture. Mr. Mahjoub remains under heavily intrusive control orders and is still on “deportation row”. However, for the first time in twelve years, he is permitted to travel outside Toronto. Mr. Mahjoub is one of five Muslim men who have been struggling for justice in Canada against so-called security certificates. Security certificates allow the government to indefinitely detain or deport people on the basis of their profile. Mr. Mahjoub will tell his story in a six-city speaking tour, as the Justice for Mahjoub Network gears up for a day of protest to mark the 12^th anniversary of his arrest on June 26th.

Notre besoin du communisme s’exprime non comme une nouvelle gestion étatique du même, mais plutôt comme manière de déjouer les dispositifs de contrôle qui nous cernent et même nous font être comme identités cernées et séparées. La Société voudrait nous réduire à nos propriétés et nos identités. Nous voulons bien jouer avec, mais d’une manière qui sabote cette Société, qui désactive ses dispositifs. Les systèmes d’oppression qui nous font, nous traversent et existent, forment la réalité de notre existence. Se donner le pouvoir de les éviter veut dire que ce pas de côté ne peut être qu’accompagné d’un art du sabotage. Nous sommes en guerre. La guerre n’est pas qu’extérieure à nous, nous sommes aussi cette guerre. Cette guerre nous traverse. Vivre le communisme est alors vécu comme un mouvement d’insurgéEs où les formes de vie existent indomptables et se partagent dans leurs puissances d’anéantissement, mais aussi d’affirmation. «D’un côté, nous voulons vivre le communisme ; de l’autre, nous voulons répandre l’anarchie.» À partir de cette proposition, plusieurs dispositions se révèlent. Cet atelier mettra en dialogue deux présentations et sera suivi d’une discussion collective

Spectacle adapté du poème de Tristan TZARA
Durée 1h
Cocktails, rafraîchissements, ballons et autres avantages.Ecrit entre 1925 et 1930, ce poème de Tristan Tzara se trouve à la croisée de l’insoumission dadaïste qui s’achève et de la révolte des surréalistes qui commence (dans le journal desquels est publié le poème pour la première fois). Il nous dévoile l’image d’un homme, jeté au hasard dans le monde, inaccessible à lui-même comme aux autres, incertain du sens de sa vie et néanmoins passionné par celle-ci. Petit homme, minuscule, réduit à des approximation de sens toujours fluctuant, soumis aux à-peu-près du destin, ballotté par l’incertitude de ses pas.

About “Disability Politics and Theory”:
An accessible introduction to disability studies,Disability Politics and Theory provides a concise survey of disability history, exploring the concept of disability as it has been conceived from the late 19th century to the present. Further, A.J. Withers examines when, how and why new categories of disability are created and describes how capitalism benefits from and enforces disabled people’s oppression. Critiquing the model that currently dominates the discipline, the social model of disability, this book offers an alternative: the radical disability model. This model builds on the social model but draws from more recent schools of radical thought, particularly feminism and critical race theory, to emphasize the role of intersecting oppressions in the marginalization of disabled people and the importance of addressing disability both independently and in conjunction with other oppressions. Intertwining theoretical and historical analysis with personal experience this book is a poignant portrayal of disabled people in Canada and the U.S. — and a radical call for social and economic justice.

Fire and Flames: A History of the German Autonomist Movement Book Launch
Monday May 28, 7pm

Fire and Flames was the first comprehensive study of the German autonomous movement ever published. Released in 1990, it reached its fifth edition by 1997, with the legendary German Konkret journal concluding that “the movement had produced its own classic.” The author, writing under the pseudonym of Geronimo, has been an autonomous activist since the movement burst onto the scene in 1980-81. In this book, he traces its origins in the Italian Autonomia project and the German social movements of the 1970s, before describing the battles for squats, “free spaces,” and alternative forms of living that defined the first decade of the autonomous movement. Tactics of the “Autonome” were militant, including the construction of barricades or throwing molotov cocktails at the police. Because of their outfit (heavy black clothing, ski masks, helmets), the Autonome were dubbed the “Black Bloc” by the German media, and their tactics have been successfully adopted and employed at anti-capitalist protests worldwide.
Fire and Flames is no detached academic study, but a passionate, hands-on, and engaging account of the beginnings of one of Europe’s most intriguing protest movements of the last thirty years. The book is being released by PM Press in April 2012, and this will be the official Montreal book launch. Copies of the book will be available at a discounted price for $15 (regular price $20). Almost a year after the start of historic hunger strikes across California, we will present an update on the situation at Pelican and other California prisons, share reflections on the strike from voices from the inside and the outside, and write letters to strikers.
Dinner will be served.
