Editorial Note: As reported yesterday, predator drones are now being used within the United States by local law enforcement agencies to target those deemed “terrorists” or “extremists.” In response, the following article discusses methods civilians may employ to counter the newest manifestation of the American Police State. NIO is publishing this article for the sole purpose of facilitating the free flow of information.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have become very popular with both the police and law enforcement agencies all over the world. They present a major challenge because they are very stealthy, and can be equipped with many tools such as LRAD, tasers, infrared cameras, and are great for information gathering. It is very important to learn how these technologies work if we have to deal with them in the future.
The UAV is actually a pretty basic concept using technology that has existed for a while. The typical UAV uses GPS, as well as stand radio control communications(2.4GHz). Mechanics of each UAV can very from using rotors to small jet engines. As stated earlier they can carry a versatile array of technologies which also present several challenges depending on their payload.
Dealing with drones should be fairly easy as groups in Afghanistan have successfully developed methods which work. Generally the slower UAVs can be shot down, although in a scenario on US soil that would probably not be an option unless you were on your own property. There are, however, several methods which would provide better anonymity.
Radio frequency jamming – Since the UAVs we would have to deal with would most likely be using standard RC frequencies, it is possible to scan for the frequency (http://desert-wolfe.com/rcscan/7200.htm ) and then use a home made signal jamming device to interrupt the signal between the UAV and its controller. These instructions detail the construction methods necessary http://www.instructables.com/id/RF-Jammer/.
GPS interruption – The GPS equipment housed on a UAV is very susceptible to GPS navigation disruption. You can build your own jammer as well following these instructions. http://www.navigadget.com/index.php/2007/01/29/homemade-gps-jammer
Signal hacking – It is possible, and has been proven that the communication signal can be “tapped” into via a program such as Skygrabber, this article talks about such hacks taking place. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126102247889095011.html
It may be possible to even build a counter UAV http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/12/spy_quadrotor/ as the materials are becoming cheaper and more readily available.
UAVs may be a new and scary technology but they are not without their drawbacks. As with any piece of electronic gadgetry, there will always be some means to disable or exploit it for the greater good of the people. If you have any more information or would like to share ideas about how to handle such a threat to our freedom, please share it.
