McDonogh 35 High School forced school officials to evacuate the building and dismiss students early on Friday. District officials said police are investigating the case as arson and a student has been apprehended as a suspect.
“The evidence points to arson, so we will be aggressive in identifying and dealing with those responsible for this incident,” Superintendent Darryl Kilbert said in a statement. “It will be dealt with as a serious violation of the law.”
The district’s statement described the fire as “minor,” and Kilbert
said, “The school’s emergency systems were enacted flawlessly to ensure a
fast and safe evacuation of all students, faculty and staff.”
