A suspected thief being taken to jail escaped from the back of an Oakland police car Monday evening, police said.
Christopher Moss, 19, was being driven to a downtown Oakland jail
when he escaped from the back of the patrol car near Seventh and
Jefferson streets about 7:45 p.m., authorities said.
“I just had a prisoner break out of my patrol car,” the officer reported on the radio.
Asked by another officer if Moss was still handcuffed, the officer
replied, “No, negative. I haven’t figured out how he did it, but the
cuffs are sitting in the back seat of my car.”
The officer was taking Moss to jail for investigation of attempted burglary and possession of stolen property.
