en es - Corfu, Greece: Communiqué on the attempted eviction of the rural squat ‘Elaia’

Yesterday morning, March 6th, a crew of Corfu Municipality stormed Elaia squat on the pretext of ‘cleansing and exploiting’ the greenhouse in the occupied rural space on behalf of the Green Municipal Administration. This morning, March 7th, the participants in the squat blocked this raid, but then the deputy mayor Yannis Riggas, who paid us a ‘visit’, defiantly gave us a deadline of five days ‘to pick up our stuff and get out.’ Further bullying, Mr. Riggas declared that he doesn’t owe anybody any explanations, neither us, nor the rest of the community – for which, as he stated, he only cares every four years, during elections — and that he won’t be held accountable to the Town Council, which has made no related decision on the matter…

In our view, this attack by the municipal authority on Elaia squat is not incidental, at a time when the restriction of political and social rights is intensified, and the Power is attempting to gag spaces and voices that resist the brutal capitalist onslaught.

During the two and a half years of its existence, Elaia squat has called for numerous strikes and demonstrations, organized political discussions and social manifestations, created a rural collective space for the co-cultivation of land, held free bazaars and free courses (of Greek to migrants, theatre, photography, dance lessons), while even the theatrical performances, the concerts, the festivities and parties which took place in the squat have always moved away from the dominant logic of commercialization and profit.

Also, in the greenhouse where the municipal authority decide to interfere we already operate a seedbed nursery for fruit and vegetables, aiming at the free distribution of plants and seeds of local varieties to people on Corfu who are faced with unemployment and poverty. In this seedbed project, apart from the squat’s agricultural collectivity, there are also individuals from other local collectivities involved. It is this space that the municipal authority of Corfu have chosen to establish an ornamental plant nursery for the jardinières of the town centre, which is filled up day by day with more and more homeless people.

As Elaia squat, we send a clear message to Corfu Municipality: there is no chance that we’ll leave this space, whatever may happen, and we will stand against the State of poverty and repression in each of its plans.

Corfú, Grecia: Comunicado sobre la tentativa de desalojo de la okupa Elaia

La mañana de ayer, 6 de marzo, un equipo de funcionarios de la municipalidad de Corfú, invadió la okupa Elaia, con el pretexto de la “limpieza y utilización” del invernadero de la okupa por parte de la Administración Verde. Hoy por la mañana, y después de que varixs participandes de la okupa bloquearan la reanudación de la operación, el vicealcalde Giannis Rigas, realizó una “visita” al espacio, para informarnos, de manera provocadora, de que teníamos 5 días para “tomar nuestras cosas y salir”. El señor Rigas, cual bravucón, declaró que no tenía que dar explicaciones a nadie, ni a nosotrxs, ni al resto de la sociedad –de la cual, según sus propias palabras, se preocupa solo cada 4 años– ni tampoco al consejo municipal, que no ha tomado aun ninguna decisión relativa a la okupa…

Este ataque contra la okupa Elaia, por parte de las autoridades municipales, no creemos que sea accidental en una época donde la restricción de los derechos políticos y sociales se agudiza y se intenta amordazar los espacios y voces que resisten al ataque de la barbarie capitalista. Durante sus dos años y medio de vida, la okupa Elaia ha convocado a muchas huelgas y manifestaciones, ha organizado debates políticos y actividades sociales, ha creado un agrocolectivo para el cultivo comunal de la tierra, un bazar libre, cursos gratuitos (de griego para migrantes, de teatro, de fotografía, de baile), mientras que las representaciones de obras teatrales, los conciertos y las fiestas que se han realizado, están siempre muy lejos de la lógica dominante de la comercialización y el lucro.

En el invernadero de la okupa, donde han decidido intervenir las autoridades municipales, está operando ya un semillero-vivero de verduras, con el objetivo del reparto gratuito de plantas y semillas de variedades locales, al pueblo de Corfú, que se enfrenta al desempleo y la pobreza. En el proyecto del semillero, aparte del agro-colectivo, participan también individuos de otros colectivos locales. Pues, es en este espacio donde las autoridades municipales de Corfú han elegido plantar un vivero de plantas ornamentales, para las macetas municipales del centro de la ciudad, que aparte de todo esto, se está llenando diariamente de, cada vez, más gente sin techo.

Nosotrxs, como okupa Elaia, mandamos el mensaje a las autoridades municipales de que no vamos a abandonar este espacio de ninguna de las maneras, pase lo que pase, y que el Estado de pobreza y represión seguirá encontrándonos en la oposición a cada uno de sus planteamientos.
