Indonesia: more fuel price demonstrations





Thousands of people protested across Indonesia on Tuesday March 27 in further demostrations against government plans to cut fuel subsidies, which would increase fuel prices by a third.

In Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, students threw stones at police officers, who returned fire with canisters of tear gas. The protestors had earlier looted a nearby restaurant, making off with some beverages.

In Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi, more than a dozen students were injured in a brawl between protestors and security officers outside the Central Sulawesi Council’s office. The students were allegedly trying to break into the office when officers fired tear gas on the crowd.

In Jakarta, around 500 protesters had pelted rocks, petrol bombs and sticks at police, who fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Police stopped the group reaching the presidential palace, but they damaged several public facilities.
