
Katsina — STUDENTS of Dr. Yusuf Bala Usman College of Legal and General Studies, Daura yesterday went on rampage smashing glasses of doors and windows of the institution over alleged lack of water and electricity supply.
The development led to the closing of the institution indefinitely by the management just as seven students have been arrested by the police in connection with the riot.
When Daily Trust visited the institution, it was observed that, students have vacated the college following the order of the management.
The rioting students in their thousands smashed all aluminium doors and windows of Balan Goggo administrative block, a sick bay, library, old administrative block and court chamber of the institution.
Provost of the institution, Dr. Abdullahi Mu’azu Saulawa, Daily Trust heard, narrowly escaped lynching by the angry students, but a security guard was injured while facilitating the escape of the provost.
The angry students set bonfires along Daura-Kano highway causing traffic-jam for some hours before they were dispersed by armed policemen from 15 Divisional Police Offices including Mani, Dutsi, Mai’Adua, Mashi, Baure, Daura and Zango who were drafted to the institution before the situation was put under control.
The Daura Divisional Police Officer, Yusuf M.L said the Divisional Police Offices were contacted for re-enforcement when the riot began.
“I was informed about the riot since Tuesday evening and later I was told that everything was put under control. But on Wednesday morning I was again informed that the students staged another riot and that I should provide police to control the situation.” Yusuf confirmed the arrest of seven students in connection with riot, saying the state Commissioner of police has ordered him to take their statement and release them immediately.
