Little stories from IMF-run Greece: 12-year old undocumented migrant arrested for scavenging through waste, facing deportation

On October 5, in the neighbourhood of Dafni in Athens the 12-year old Ali Mohammed Rasul was arrested by police while scavenging through a waste bin. He was taken to the local police station and then to a juvenile detention centre in Thrakomakedones, NW Attica – as he does not have papers. The 12-year old has another two underage siblings and his mother staying in the city and wishes to be rejoined with them. When people in solidarity contacted the detention centre in which he is held, they were told that should the mother herself have papers (which she hasn’t) she could collect him. Should, however, she tried to visit the centre without having papers herself, she would also be arrested. The response of the detention guards was that the 12-year old boy would stay in detention for a period of 6 months – one year before being served with a deportation order.

It is repeated that the 12-year old boy wants to return to his family and does not wish to stay in the detention centre of the state. We ask for the interest and the support of comrades, as well as legal support, in order for the boy to re-join his family. Comrades this is an urgent matter.
