Four police officers injured in bomb attack — Ankara, Turkey

Four police officers were injured when a bomb placed near a demonstration site exploded in southern Turkey on Sunday, Turkey’s Today’s Zaman reported, Xinhua reported.

Turkish police believed the bomb, placed in a pile of garbage on obalar street in the province of Adana, was exploded by a remote control, which injured four police officers, including two in serious conditions, the report said.

The explosion took place as riot police were trying to disperse a demonstration in support of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), the report said, adding that demonstrators attacked the police with stones and Molotov cocktails.

The PKK has recently intensified its attacks on Turkish troops, police and civilians. Turkish officials vowed to reciprocate with absolute determination.

Listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, the PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. More than 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the PKK during the past over two decades.
