Students Clash with Police in Syntagma

Students clashed with riot police today noon at Syntagma Square, Athens, when students refused to end their sit-down demonstration and leave Amalia Boulevard.

Tension broke out when riot police officers tried to restore traffic in front of the Parliament building, since the protest had closed the roads around Syntagma Square for many hours. The riot police arrested one person.

Students, who had flooded the streets of Athens downtown since early in the morning, were protesting against school shortages and unpopular reforms scheduled by the Ministry of Education.
