Cleveland officials try new flash mobs crackdown

CLEVELAND (AP) – Local lawmakers in Cleveland are making another attempt at cracking down on violent flash mobs, which a city council member calls “modern-day terrorists.”

Councilman Zack Reed tells WJW-TV that unruly gatherings pulled together by social media terrorize communities and family-friendly events.

Ordinances proposed at Monday’s council meeting would outlaw rioting and allow computers and cell phones to be categorized as criminal tools.

Earlier this year, the council approved a measure to make it illegal to use social media to organize a violent and disorderly flash mob. But the mayor vetoed the legislation after the American Civil Liberties Union said it would be unconstitutional.
