Police shoot individual in Bayview

San Francisco police have shot a person in the Bayview district Saturday afternoon in what may be The City’s second transit-related shooting in two weeks.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. near the Muni stop at Third Street and Oakdale Avenue. KGO (Ch. 7) reported that a man was shot at six to 10 times after getting off a T-Third Street light-rail train. The man did not have a valid fare and was running away from the train when shot to avoid paying a fine.

About three dozen police in riot gear were on the scene, with members of the neighborhood visibly upset. People who gathered at the Muni stop were throwing bottles at police, who had three blocks of Third Street blocked off, from Palou to Newcomb avenues.

The Fire Department was also on the scene and had a ladder going to the rooftop of a nearby building, possibly to search for a discarded weapon, according to police and fire officials.

On July 3, BART police officers shot and killed Charles Hill, who allegedly was drunk and wielding a broken bottle and one or two knives on the platform at the Civic Center station.



UPDATE: Man shot by police in Bayview dies

A 19-year-old man who was shot by police Saturday afternoon in the Bayview has died.

The suspect, who was shot by two officers after allegedly turning and firing at the cops, was running from police after failing to provide a valid Muni fare died. A spokeswoman for Supervisor Malia Cohen, who represents the Bayview district, said she received confirmation from San Francisco General Hospital that the suspect died. Police said the man died at 7:01 p.m.

The man was shot near the Muni stop at Third Street and Oakdale Avenue, police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. The suspect was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Witnesses said approximately seven shots were fired and the man was struck in the neck.

Neither officer was injured.

“My heart goes out to the family as they grieve the loss of their loved one,” Cohen said in a released statement. “Today’s shooting is under ongoing Police investigation, and I urge anyone with any information to notify SFPD immediately. I intend to review the results of the internal investigation from the Police Department to ensure Department protocol was followed.”

This is the second transit-related shooting in The City in two weeks. On July 3, BART police officers shot and killed Charles Hill, who allegedly was drunk and wielding a broken bottle and one or two knives on the platform at the Civic Center station.

In Saturday’s incident, the two officers were conducting Muni fare inspections on a T-Third Street light-rail train when they detained the suspect on the platform at Third and Oakdale. The man bolted from the platform and fired back on the two officers, Andraychak said. That is when the cops shot at the suspect, with one officer kneeling down to take aim, according to one witness.

“Information is still preliminary, but we believe that during the foot pursuit, the suspect fired at the uniformed officers,” Andraychak said.

A pile of bloody clothes was in the street near the Bayview Opera House, with a yellow police evidence marker nearby.

The incident created a stir in the predominately black neighborhood. Witnesses said one officer was white and the other Hispanic.

Initially, SWAT team members in riot gear were on the scene. People who gathered at the scene were throwing bottles at cops, who had three blocks of Third Street blocked off, from Palou to Newcomb avenues.

A Fire Department ladder was extended to the rooftop of a nearby building so police could search for a weapon the suspect allegedly threw onto the roof of a one-story building across the street from the Joseph P. Lee Recreation Center. Police did not say whether a weapon had been found.

Some of the witnesses were upset that officers shot at the suspect because there were children in the area, which is a communal spot to watch neighborhood activities.
