Village head loses eye in cop attack

RANCHI: Police on Sunday thrashed the pradhan of Bahera Tand village in Latehar district and damaged his right eye during an anti-Maoist operation, exposing the ugly face of police excesses.

In the past also, similar incidents in which villagers were thrashed and some were killed during the anti-Maoist operations had come to fore.

Police were interrogating Vifa Parhiya in connection with Maoist activities in the area. When Parhiya expressed his inability to give any information, the men in khaki lost their cool and started beating up him.

“Around 12 policemen came to my house on Friday night and asked me to give information about the Maoists. When I expressed ignorance, they took me to a nearby camp and started assaulting me. One of them hit my right eye with a baton and blood oozed out of it,” said Parhiya. “Policemen did not even give me first aid and asked me to leave the camp after a few hours.”
