Molotov cocktail thrown into gas station office — Franklin Lakes, NJ

Police are searching for a suspect who tossed a Molotov cocktail inside a local gas station office early Sunday, Aug. 21, igniting a fire and causing minor damage.

The incident occurred at Delta gas station, 941 Franklin Ave., near the Oakland border.

Police Detective Lt. John Bakelaar said a Franklin Avenue resident called police at about 4:20 a.m., reporting a loud noise and flames inside the gas station office.

Upon arrival at the scene, Bakelaar said, police entered the office and snuffed out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He said damage was minimal and that the gas station was open as of Monday, Aug. 22.

Bakelaar said a window on the east side of the office was broken and that a plastic bottle filled with paper towels soaked in an accelerant - likely gasoline - was found inside. He said the window was shattered either by the bottle itself or by another object.

The Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with a fan to eject smoke from the office. Oakland police provided mutual aid.

Bakelaar would not comment on possible leads.

Spy vs Spy: Cyber Crime, Surveillance on Rise in Latin America

Phone tapping, data theft, and secret recordings have made headlines across Latin America in recent weeks, reflecting the growth of cyber crime and information trafficking in the region, as Southern Pulse explains.

Domestic spying is in the news this month in the Western Hemisphere. A subject that is often not discussed in formal settings has made its way to the front pages of at least a dozen countries in Latin America and the Caribbean over the past few weeks. The news includes phone taps, hacked emails, covert video surveillance and legislative debates over privacy online and offline. A confluence of events around the region and the globe as well as improved spying technology has pushed this trend into the open and could change how the spy vs spy, police vs crime and government vs opposition scenarios play out in several countries. Social media could render covert policing ‘impossible’

Not even police officers can hide due to online information and use of biometrics, says ex-AFP commissioner

Hamish Barwick

Facebook has proven to be one of the biggest dangers in keeping undercover police officers safe due to applications such as facial recognition and photo tagging, according to a adjunct professor at ANU and Charles Sturt University.

Mick Keelty, a former Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner, told the audience at Security 2011 in Sydney that because of the convergence of a number of technologies including biometrics, undercover policing may be “impossible” in the future.

He explained that were safety risks associated with undercover policing if people could be identified online.

“You can’t just immerse an officer into a crime group; it takes up to seven years to get them into the right place [in the gang] where they can feed back the intelligence that you need,” Keelty said. (more on techworld.com.au)

Roma camp in Kalasatama evicted in massive police operation

About 40 police officers emptied the makeshift camp set up by Romanian Roma in the Kalasatama area of Helsinki on Tuesday.
In the massive operation, up to seven police cars surrounded the Satama Social Centre. The centre’s door was broken down, and police officers in riot gear climbed on the roof of the building. Police dogs and a police bus were also on hand, says a Helsingin Sanomat journalist who was on the spot.

The approximately 30 Roma who were there were given an hour to vacate the area. A leaflet written in Romanian instructed the Roma to go to the day centre maintained by the Deaconess Centre, where further information would be available to them.
The City of Helsinki is not offering accommodations.
“They have been instructed over the past two weeks to set up camp at a camping ground at their own expense, or to contact their embassy or the day centre. The main policy line is that the city is not arranging accommodation for them, and that they must get by on their own”, says Jarmo Räihä of the Helsinki Social Services department.

The Roma left the area peacefully. They had not been notified of the exact eviction day in advance.
“We have no place to go. We were given an hour to leave, but we have no car or any possibility to take our things with us”, said Regina, whose comments were translated by Keiju Oksanen, a Satama activist. Regina said that she had lived at Satama for over a year.
Oksanen said that not all of the Roma who had been living in the centre were present during the eviction, and their goods were left behind. They are to be taken away. Some cars and caravans were also left behind the fence that is being put up. They are to be towed away by the City of Helsinki.

The Public Works Department of the City of Helsinki has started putting up a fence around the social centre. The area is to be cleaned, and the Satama building is to be demolished starting on Wednesday.

IDF Snipers To Use Laser Designator in Riot Control

Israel is taking a number of steps to add to its non-lethal weapons inventory in anticipation of upcoming protests. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) expect violent demonstrations following Palestine’s declaration of statehood planned for September 20 at the United Nations.

Last month the IDF began downgrading the caliber of their weapons (from 5.56 rounds to .22) and adding more non-lethal weapons like impact rounds, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Israel has been criticized for deaths and injuries caused by rubber bullets in the past, but it’s the Israeli military’s addition of a new technology to its coutner-protest doctrine that has people talking now.

Field tested during protests along the Israeli/Syrian border, the IDF says the Amit laser designation system will help improve accuracy of IDF snipers using rubber bullets when trying to quell protesters.

During protests, snipers manned the Israeli/Syrian border to shoot rubber bullets at protesters to deter their crossing into Israel, but the snipers couldn’t get clear shots in some weather conditions.

Because the Amit can designate targets up to a kilometer away in any weather conditions, they began using the system to target protesters. Snipers aim the laser designator at the legs of a protestor, and then shoot for the laser.
