Molotov cocktail thrown into gas station office — Franklin Lakes, NJ
Police are searching for a suspect who tossed a Molotov cocktail inside a local gas station office early Sunday, Aug. 21, igniting a fire and causing minor damage.
The incident occurred at Delta gas station, 941 Franklin Ave., near the Oakland border.
Police Detective Lt. John Bakelaar said a Franklin Avenue resident called police at about 4:20 a.m., reporting a loud noise and flames inside the gas station office.
Upon arrival at the scene, Bakelaar said, police entered the office and snuffed out the flames with a fire extinguisher. He said damage was minimal and that the gas station was open as of Monday, Aug. 22.
Bakelaar said a window on the east side of the office was broken and that a plastic bottle filled with paper towels soaked in an accelerant - likely gasoline - was found inside. He said the window was shattered either by the bottle itself or by another object.
The Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with a fan to eject smoke from the office. Oakland police provided mutual aid.
Bakelaar would not comment on possible leads.
