1,000 Evicted From Rise Farm
Aug 29, 2011 (Nairobi Star/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) — Over 1,000 villagers said to have invaded part of Dominion Rice Farms in Siaya County for cultivation were yesterday evicted by anti-riot police.
The incident came barely a week after the Nigerian former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited the multibillion rice farms. The residents had failed to honour a three-month notice requesting them to harvest their crops and leave the land along Yala Swamp. They had also been told to stop cultivating the land but instead continued to plant different types of crops.
Attempts by the villagers to oppose the eviction hit a snag yesterday as they tried to confront the law enforcement officers who were carrying out the order. Boro West councillor Leonard Oriaro led the villagers into a heated debate with the security team comprising Administration and Regular Police officers in vain. The officers had been asked to enforce the order to restore order on part of the land allocated to the American investor.
